Every lead bullet tells you what it's designed to do before it ever leaves the barrel. The clue is in the nose.

Round noses feed smoothly through lever guns and revolvers but leave modest wound channels. Flat points hit harder without sacrificing reliability. Semi-wadcutters cut clean, full-diameter holes for scoring and defense. Wadcutters go all in on maximum diameter, sacrificing feeding for pure accuracy on paper. None of these shapes happened by accident. Each one is the result of decades of iteration — shooters demanding more, and toolmakers figuring out how to deliver it.

From Round Nose to Wadcutter: Six Decades of Profile Evolution

The earliest cartridge bullets were round nose almost by default. Rounded ogives fed reliably through tube magazines and early repeating actions, and reliability mattered more than terminal performance in an era when most shooting was utilitarian — hunting, defense, and military use.

As shooters asked for more from their bullets, the profiles started to change. Flat points and truncated cones emerged to increase the meplat — the flat tip diameter — for a bigger, more immediate wound channel without giving up the smooth ogive that kept bullets feeding reliably.

Semi-wadcutters pushed the idea further. A sharp, distinct shoulder just behind the nose punches a clean, full-caliber hole, while the ogive ahead of it still tapers enough to feed through most actions. It's a compromise profile, and it's one of the most successful bullet shapes ever designed.

That compromise has made the semi-wadcutter a mainstay across classic revolver and pistol calibers such as .38 Special, .357 Magnum, 9mm, and .45 ACP, where reloaders and defensive shooters value its combination of clean expansion and dependable feeding.

Full wadcutters abandon the compromise altogether. A flat-faced, cylindrical bullet with almost no ogive at all, designed to cut the roundest, most precisely scored hole possible in a paper target — feeding be damned. It's a profile built for one job, and it does that job better than anything else on the market.

Wadcutter bullets remain the standard for .38 Special and .32 S&W wadcutter loads in bullseye and NRA action pistol competition, where every thousandth of an inch on the scoring ring matters.
