From Sample to Ten Ring - Recreating a Precision 45 ACP Bullet

Every custom bullet starts with a story. This one started with a small padded envelope and a note from one of the best precision pistol shooters in the world.

He shoots .45 ACP at the highest level of precision target competition, where the ten ring is small, the X ring is smaller, and a single flyer can decide a match. For years he had trusted one jacketed .45 ACP bullet. He had built his loads around it, tuned his pistols to it, and won with it.

Then it was gone. His supply dried up, and no one could make it anymore.

His note was part heartbreak, part hope. He was sad to lose the bullet that had carried him for so long and desperate to find a replacement before his stock ran out. But he was also optimistic. He had heard that if anyone could recreate a bullet exactly, it was Corbin.

His question was simple: "Can you make these?"

Reading the Samples

A sample bullet tells you a lot if you know how to read it. We measured every one he sent: diameter, length, weight, ogive and nose profile, meplat, base shape, jacket thickness and how the jacket was folded at the nose. We sectioned one to see how the core sat inside the jacket.

The samples were excellent. They were uniform from one bullet to the next, and it was easy to see why a shooter of his caliber trusted them. This wasn't a rescue job. It was a much harder challenge: match a bullet that was already very good, and then find a way to make it even better.

Recreating It the Corbin Way

Since 1975, Corbin has built the swaging dies behind custom bullets around the world. For this project, we used that same tooling and experience to make the bullet ourselves.

Swaging forms a bullet under high pressure inside precision dies, at room temperature. There is no casting, so there are no voids or shrinkage. Each lead core is cut to a set weight, seated inside a copper jacket, and pressed into its final shape. Every bullet comes out of the same die, under the same pressure, with the same dimensions.

First, we matched his bullet exactly: the same profile, the same weight and the same seating behavior, so it would drop into his loads and feed through his pistols just like the bullet he knew. Then we went further:

  • Diamond-lapped dies. Our dies are lapped to a mirror finish, which gives a smooth, uniform bullet surface and consistent dimensions shot after shot.
  • Weight-controlled cores. Each core was cut and pre-formed to a uniform weight before swaging, keeping bullet-to-bullet variation as tight as we could hold it.
  • Concentric jackets. Our precision bullet jackets keep wall thickness even all the way around, so the bullet's center of mass sits right on its axis.
  • A true, square base. A clean, consistent base lets the bullet leave the muzzle the same way every time.
  • A supply he can count on. Because we own the tooling and make the bullets in-house, he never has to worry about his bullet disappearing again.

Back on Target

We sent him the first run and waited for the call.

When it came, the worry in his voice was gone. The bullets fed smoothly, seated the same every time and shot the way a world-class shooter demands. He had asked us to recreate his bullet. What he got was better than he had imagined: the bullet he knew, made more consistently than ever, from a source that won't go away.

For us, that call is the best part of the job.

Have a Bullet You Can't Find?

Discontinued, out of production, or impossible to find? Send us a few samples. We'll measure them, tell you what we see, and quote a run made with the same precision that serves top competitors.

Whether it's a classic handgun bullet, a rifle match bullet or a PCP airgun slug, if it can be swaged, Corbin can make it. Contact us to start your custom bullet project.
